I used 1/2" plywood for the staging drawer to give more headroom, but it began sagging between the drawer slides (~38" spacing). The mid-span sags probably wouldn't have been a problem for trains, but the 10" cantilevers at each end were rising relative to the fixed benchwork, making that interface bumpy. Plus, they were visually unappealing.
